Electric Vehicle Benefits For Businesses

Electric vehicles (EVs) offer a wide range of environmental and financial benefits for businesses, making them a compelling alternative to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles.

Why Businesses Are Switching to Electric Vehicles

Support Environmental Goals

EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint and align with sustainability and ESG objectives.

Access financial incentives

Businesses can benefit from multiple tax advantages and government incentives, reducing the overall cost of ownership.

A smarter alternative to combustion engine vehicles

Compared to petrol and diesel vehicles, EVs deliver lower running costs, reduced maintenance requirements, and long-term financial efficiency.

Financial Benefits of Fully Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles can significantly reduce day-to-day business motoring costs:

Lower ‘fuel’ costs

Charging an EV typically costs £3–£5 per 100 miles, compared to £13–£16 per 100 miles for combustion engine vehicles.

Cheaper travel in central London

EVs qualify for discounts in Congestion Charge zones.

Reduced maintenance costs

With fewer moving parts and no oil changes required, EVs are generally cheaper to service and maintain.

Low Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) rates

Fully electric vehicles benefit from highly favourable BiK taxation:

Government Grants & Initiatives

Government Grants for Electric Cars & Taxi's

Grants for Electric Taxis

  • Up to £2,500 available towards the purchase of new and approved low-emission cars
  • Eligible vehicles must have a purchase price under £35,000
  • Cars must produce less than 50g/km of CO₂
  • Vehicles must be capable of travelling at least 70 miles with zero emissions

Grants for Electric Taxis

  • Up to £7,500 available for purpose-built, low-emission taxis
  • Applies to approved models such as Dynamo and LEVC

Taxis must meet the same eligibility criteria:

  • CO₂ emissions below 50g/km
  • Minimum 70 miles of zero-emission driving range

Government Grants for Electric Vans

Businesses can reduce the upfront cost of electric vans through government grants designed to support the transition to low-emission commercial vehicles.

Electric Van Grant Amounts

  • Small electric vans (under 2.5 tonnes GVW)
35% of the purchase price, capped at £3,000
  • Large electric vans (2.5–3.5 tonnes GVW)
35% of the purchase price, capped at £6,000

Electric Van Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the grant, vans must meet the following requirements:

  • CO₂ emissions below 50g/km
  • Ability to travel at least 96 km (60 miles) with zero tailpipe emissions

Government Grants for Electric Trucks

Businesses can access substantial grants to offset the cost of electric trucks, supporting the transition to low-emission commercial fleets.

Small electric trucks (N2, 3.5–12 tonnes GVW)

  • 20% of the purchase price, up to £16,000
  • Applies to the first 250 trucks ordered per financial year
  • Limit of 10 trucks per customer

Large electric trucks (N3, over 12 tonnes GVW)

  • 20% of the purchase price, up to £25,000
  • Applies to the first 100 trucks ordered per financial year
  • Limit of 5 trucks per customer

Electric Truck Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be capable of travelling at least 60 miles with zero tailpipe emissions

Environmental Benefits to EVs

Pure electric vehicles run off electricity only, making them excellent assets for companies expressing green initiatives, or require zero-emission vehicles to operate effectively.

Even with the production of lithium batteries and the source of the electricity used to charge them, they are significantly better for the environment compared to petrol or diesel vehicles.

Additionally, as renewable energy becomes more popular, the electricity source will get greener. You can find out more about our renewable energy offering here.

This video goes in-depth on the Environmental differences between EVs and ICE vehicles.

ICE vs EV Vehicles: Benefits Of Electric Cars

To add to the various financial benefits through Government grants of choosing an electric vehicle over a traditional petrol or diesel vehicle, electric vehicle benefits also include:

Environmental Impact

Pure Electric Cars produce no emissions, which significantly reduces air pollution and greenhouse gases compared to ICE vehicles.

EVs are also more sustainable compared to ICE vehicles, as they can be powered by renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

Cost Savings

Electricity is generally cheaper than petrol or diesel, this therefore results in lower fuel costs for EV owners.

EVs have significantly fewer moving parts, resulting in lower maintenance costs and reduced wear and tear.

Performance and Driving Experience

Electric motors deliver instant torque, ensuring quick and smooth acceleration. Additionally, EVs are known for their quiet operation, offering a much less noisy driving experience compared to ICE vehicles.

Convenience

The convenience of owning an EV largely depends on your setup. With a home charger, you have easy and regular access to charging without leaving your house, eliminating the need for frequent trips to the petrol station. Additionally, you can charge your vehicle on the go, with over 32,000 charging locations available across the UK.

Energy Efficiency

EVs are more energy-efficient because they convert a higher percentage of battery energy into movement compared to the energy conversion in ICE vehicles.

Electric Vehicles also use regenerative braking - a smart technique that captures and reuses energy otherwise lost during braking, enhancing overall efficiency. This system also reduces wear and tear on the brakes, allowing brake pads to last longer compared to those on traditional petrol or diesel vehicles.

Electric Vehicle Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes, the Plug-in Van Grant provides savings on electric and plug-in vans. You can get up to £2,500 off certain small vans, and up to £5,000 off some larger vans.

To be eligible for a grant, the vehicle must:

  • be less than 2,500 kilograms (kg) gross vehicle weight
  • have CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km
  • be able to travel at least 96km (60 miles) without any emissions

There's also the Electric vehicle chargepoint grant, which provides up to £350 per socket towards the cost of installing chargepoints at your property or business.

Electric vehicles offer a range of benefits, whether for personal use or business purposes. Most importantly, they are cheaper to run than traditional petrol or diesel vehicles, with lower fuel and maintenance costs. Electricity is more cost-effective per mile than petrol or diesel, and EVs have fewer moving parts, which means reduced maintenance needs and costs. Additionally, there are various grants available for electric cars and vans that can help you save on brand-new vehicles. Finally, you'll also receive lower charges from clean air zones around the UK.

Businesses can claim tax relief on new zero-emission vehicles, including electric cars. These vehicles qualify for the First Year Allowance (FYA), allowing 100% of the EV’s value to be offset against that year’s taxable profits.

To locate the nearest electric vehicle charging station, you can use your EV’s in-car navigation system or various smartphone apps. Options include Google Maps and dedicated charging apps like ZapMap, ChargeFinder, or PlugShare.
