What Can Asset Finance Help You Acquire?

Asset finance can support purchases across a wide range of business activities, from a single working vehicle to equipment for an expanding operation.

Business Vehicles

Chauffeur cars, taxis, vans, HGVs, buses and coaches. Explore funding for replacing an existing vehicle or adding to your fleet.

Plant and Machinery

Construction plant, agricultural machinery and equipment for plant hire businesses. Discuss the machinery you need, its intended use and when it needs to be working.

Equipment and Technology

Manufacturing equipment, specialist machinery and business technology. Explore funding for equipment that supports production, service delivery or day-to-day operations.

The assets a lender will consider depend on their type, age, condition, value and intended use. If your purchase isn’t listed, tell us what you have in mind.

Ways to Finance Your Next Asset

Different agreements offer different routes to using or owning an asset. The options available will depend on the purchase, your business circumstances and lender criteria.

Spread the purchase cost over an agreed term. Ownership transfers to your business once all required payments and any option-to-purchase fee have been paid.

Defer part of the purchase cost to a larger final payment. This can reduce regular repayments compared with an otherwise equivalent agreement without that deferral. You remain responsible for the final balance, so it needs to be included in your plans.

Use the asset in return for rental payments while the finance provider retains legal ownership. End-of-term arrangements depend on the agreement and may include continuing to rent the asset or arranging an approved sale to a third party. Ownership does not automatically transfer to your business.

Use an asset for an agreed period and return it at the end, subject to the agreement’s conditions. Check any restrictions on use, return requirements and responsibilities for maintenance and insurance.

For eligible vehicles, pay to use the vehicle over an agreed term and mileage allowance, then return it subject to the contract’s conditions. Maintenance may be available as part of the package; check what is included and any potential additional charges.

Look Beyond the Monthly Payment

A useful comparison considers how the agreement fits your business throughout its term and what happens at the end.

Your initial payment and total cost
Check the deposit or initial rental, regular payments, interest, fees and any final payment. A lower monthly payment does not necessarily mean a lower overall cost.

How you will use the asset
Consider expected mileage or operating hours, maintenance requirements and any restrictions on use.

Your plans for ownership or replacement
Think about how long you expect to need the asset and whether you want to own it, return it or replace it when the agreement ends.

Your ongoing business commitments
Allow for operating costs and other repayments, including during quieter trading periods. The asset may be repossessed if repayments are not maintained.

Tax and accounting treatment depends on the agreement and your business circumstances. Confirm these implications with your accountant or professional adviser.

How Ethos Helps You Arrange Asset Finance

We start with your planned purchase and business requirements. As a credit broker, we explore options through our lender panel and explain the features, costs and conditions of any offer.

1. Tell Us About Your Purchase

Share the vehicle or equipment you need, its expected price and when you would like to proceed. If you have a supplier quotation, include it.

2. Explore the Available Options

We’ll discuss your requirements and explain what information is needed to approach lenders. Availability and terms depend on the asset and your business circumstances.

3. Review and Complete the Agreement

If finance is offered, we’ll explain the terms so you can decide whether to proceed. If you go ahead, we’ll help coordinate the paperwork and any outstanding lender requirements.

What to Have Ready

  • Details of the vehicle or equipment and its intended business use.
  • The purchase price or supplier quotation.
  • Any deposit or initial contribution you plan to make.
  • Your preferred purchase or delivery date.
  • Information about any existing asset or finance agreement being replaced.

You don’t need every answer before contacting us. Share what you know, and we’ll explain what else may be needed.

Asset Finance FAQs

Used assets may be eligible for finance. Lenders will consider factors such as age, condition, value and remaining working life, alongside your business circumstances.

Applications may be considered from sole traders, partnerships and limited companies, including newer businesses. The available options and supporting information required will depend on the lender’s assessment.

The initial contribution varies by product, lender, asset and applicant. We’ll explain any deposit or initial rental required as part of the options available to you.

You can speak to us while you’re still planning. A supplier quotation helps provide a clearer starting point, but you can initially share the type of asset, approximate budget and intended timescale.

Timescales depend on the asset, lender checks and how quickly the required information is provided. Tell us about any delivery date or deadline at the outset so we can discuss the process with that in mind.

Looking to Raise Funds Against Assets You Already Have?

If your business already has vehicles, machinery or equipment, asset refinancing may allow you to release funds against their value while continuing to use them. Assets with outstanding finance may also be considered, depending on their value, settlement figures and lender criteria.
